Lewisburg WV to Washington DCDay 10 for the Run, Day 4 for me.
Saturday May 22, 2009

Staging this morning is in the Brier Inn parking in Lewisburg. Before staging my bike I went to Hardees for breakfast. Darn I had to pay for that one. Today would be a 258 miles with two gas stops.

Today the 7th platoon consisting of trikes, trailers and sidecars, will ride ahead of the main pack. This should make for a safer, and less congested entry.

Our first gas stop was at Raphine WV. It was a quick in and out and on to Toms Brook for gas and food. At Toms Brooks lunch was provided by the Tree of Life Ministries of Lynchburg VA. Typically the final miles into DC proper is very busy and difficult. However this year, the lanes had been closed off for us and we had the smoothest and safest ride in recent memory.
When we arrived in Arlington VA (across from DC) we broke up and went our separate way. We were spread out over several hotels and some were camping.
The evening was open for your own arrangement with some attending a candlelight vigil at the Wall and others went to 8th & I to watch the Marine Corps Evening Parade. However we all chose to end our first night in DC, we all go to bed thinking of our most important stop tomorrow, the Wall.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://my-senior-blog.blogspot.com/2009/06/run-for-wall-lewisburg-wv-to-washington.html' title='Run for the Wall. Hurricane WV to Rainelle WV/Lewisburg WV

Run for the Wall. Hurricane WV to Rainelle WV/Lewisburg WV
Day 9 for the Run day 3 for me

Staging this morning is at Valley Park Wave Pool. After staging my bike with the third platoon I again had another free meal. This time breakfast. Sorry, again I don’t know who to thank. After the morning meeting we departed for a short ride to Charleston the capital of West By God Virginia. I have heard it said that way many times. Today will be a short riding day, only 131 miles. That is so we can spend time at Rainelle school.

When we reached Charleston we staged our bikes on the walkway in front of the State Capital. They took a huge picture with the whole Run gathered on the steps of the State Capital building. After a speech by the Governor and a visit their beautiful veterans memorial we were again on our way. O yes someone did have snack and cool drinks for us.

Instead of heading back to the interstate we headed up Rt. 60 to Rainelle WV. The scenery along Rt.60 was beautiful, but the was a little twisty and demanded our full attention. On Rt.60 we ride single file and the pace was much slower then the interstate. At two of the towns we passed through all the children were standing if front of their schools waving and shouting as we went by. At one town they took us off our route to pass by the school where the children and teachers were wearing red T shirts in our honor. They also waved, yelled and waved the Red, White And Blue. Just before arriving in Rainelle I again ran out of gas. This time I turned the valve the right way and continued with no difficulty.

Rainelle School, Rainelle WV.

The first time I joined the Run in 2007 I heard about Rainelle school. As I have said I was amazed by all that I experienced on the Run, but continued to hear “wait till you get to Rainelle”. Run for the Wall central route has adopted Rainelle school and Rainelle school has adopted Run for the Wall central route. During the morning meeting they collect money, hold 50/50 drawings and raffle off items donated, with the money going to Rainelle school. This year we raise over $11,000. That is over $1000 for each day of the Run.
As we approached Rainelle we form up two by two and our lead bikes unfurled their large flags as we ride into town. In front of Rainelle school the fire dept. has a truck with the ladder extended holding a large U.S. flag. We parade the length of town then make a u turn and return to the school. We park four wide in front of the school, blocking half the width of the street. The kids are lined along the sidewalk waiting for us to dismount and join them. They surround the riders and hand us their autograph books to sign. Some of them have white t shirts the ask us to autograph. Some of the riders hand out nick knacks to the kids. After spending time with the kids we move into the school for lunch. Again we are provide with a free meal, this time by the people of Rainelle. After lunch and gabbing with other riders we move outside around to the back of the school. They have a nice ceremony and present the school with the $11,000 that has been collected. The Moose Lodge provided dinner and VFW Post 4484 provided breakfast the next morning.

For that day the Run ends an Rainelle but stages the next morning at Lewisburg WV.

After the ceremonies I wondered around town for a while but did not stay in Rainelle for dinner. This was only day 3 for me but I was tired so I rode the 30 miles to Lewisburg and checked into my motel to get some rest.

I have reread what I have written about Rainelle and it doesn’t do the experience justice. Like they said “wait to get to Rainelle” . When I would ask what do you mean the answer was you’ll see. They were right. You have to be there to understand. If I can still ride a bike I will be in Rainelle again next year.

Tomorrow we arrive in Arlington VA/Washington DC .

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://my-senior-blog.blogspot.com/2009/06/run-for-wall-hurricane-wv-to-rainelle.html' title='Run for the Wall. A typical day.

Run for the Wall. A typical day.
This year I have been staying at motels instead of camping. This has made the Run easier for me. First thing after leaving the motel is to find food. Some days the motel has a continental breakfast, some days it is a fast food breakfast and some days there is breakfast at the morning staging site.

Morning meeting
Every morning there is a morning meeting. This meeting is mandatory for all riders. This meeting starts with the Pledge of allegiance.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
After the Pledge they talk about any problems from the previous day and anything we need to watch out for that day. They go into detail about any hazards, lane changes or other expected problems. During the meeting they raise money for Rainelle School by selling 50/50 tickets and raffling off items that have been donated.
They read the name of a solder that was KIA or MIA on that day in Viet Nam and ask a FNG to take a small memorial with this soldiers name and history to the Wall. On my first Run (2007) I was told FNG means fine new guy, but if you were in the service you know better. They ask how may joined that day and how many are FNG. They all get applause and a hug. The FNGs are much appreciated and I make a special effort to help them on their way, just as Ken from Kansas did for me in 2007. They end the meeting with a prayer. They ask “How far are we going and we answer all the way”. How far are we going, all the way means we are going all the way to the Wall.
They release us to our platoon leader for their instructions. This is necessary every morning because we have so many new riders. They talk about how we ride, hand signal, and anything that applies to our platoon. When they finish we are released and wonder around until we hear five minutes, five minutes. That means that we have five minute to check our bikes, get our gear on and get out butts on the bike, kick stands up and ready to ride.

Road guards, State police, County sheriffs and local police.

Road guards, loud and proud. Loud because they have to be so their directions will be heard and followed. Proud because of what they do for the Run. Outside of the Run our road guards have no legal authority, within the Run the control our ride. Without the road guards I don’t think we could find our way out of the staging area. They control our entrance and exits from all our stops. They block traffic so we can safely enter the highway the run ahead and block entrance ramps. They keeps the riders in line while we ride. Several of the road guards hold a salute as we pass their position.

State police, county sheriffs and local police.
I am still amazed at the amount of cooperation we get from law enforcement. In a lot of locations they work with the Run road guards to control traffic and help us on our way. It was not unusual to see a state police, sheriff or local officer hold a salute as we pass by.

Church, veterans and local civic groups.
It is difficult to explain all that people along the way have done for the riders on the Run. On my daily postings I try to give credit to those that has helped us on our way. I know that I have missed many and for that I apologize.

At the end of the day the road guards guide us to our final stop of the day. When we park the bike we usually find that some wonderful group has provide dinner for us. After dinner we break up and set off for the camping area and motels.

Next posting on to Rainelle School.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://my-senior-blog.blogspot.com/2009/06/run-for-wall-typical-day.html' title='Run for the Wall. Corydon IN. to Hurricane WV.

Day 8 for the Run, day 2 for me.
Wednesday 20 2009
Staging this morning was at the White Castle parking lot in Corydon. First I staged my bike with the third platoon then started to wonder around. I found a table with sausage biscuit sandwiches, donuts, juice and coffee. Another free meal thanks to the good people at the Corydon Chamber of Commerce.

After the morning meeting we departed for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Louisville KY. We departed with about 335 bikes. This was a tricky ride due to morning traffic and several lane and highway changes. We all arrived safely at our first stop at the VAMC. We enjoyed seeing our old friends Billy Pfeister (the popcorn man) but missed Mr. Robley Rex, a 108 year old WWI vet who passed away a few weeks ago. Robley had been a fixture at Louisville for many years and it was like we all had lost a special friend. They are special supporters of the Run and everyone looks forward to seeing them each year as well as visiting the patients.

When we left the VAMC, and after a quick fueling stop at Waddy we rode to the Kentucky Viet Nam veterans Memorial. Second to the Wall this is the most impressive memorial I have seen. It is a giant sundial. Surrounding it is cement with the names of Vietnam Vets from Kentucky. The shadow of the sundial rests on the names of the vets who had died on that day many years ago.

We had a gas stop and lunch at Mt. Sterling on our own and then on to Hurricane. Sorry no free food or gas this time.

The Run has stopped in Hurricane for many years at Yamaha Power Sports. This year the stop was moved to the Valley Park Wave Pool. We rode in through town and were greeted by townspeople at the Valley Park Wave Pool. Again another free dinner. Spaghetti, salad, etc. and drinks. I am so sorry but I don’t know what group provided this meal, but thank you very much. Camping with showers were also provided. Surprise, surprise we were provided with breakfast.

Only two more days! Tomorrow we stop at Rainelle WV. Rainelle is one of the most looked forward to stops on the Central route.

There will be more.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://my-senior-blog.blogspot.com/2009/06/run-for-wall-corydon-in-to-hurricane-wv.html' title='Run for the Wall. Part 2
Tuesday 19 2009
We got back on the road and stopped for lunch at Mt. Vernon. About a quarter mile from the Mt. Vernon exit ramp I ran out of gas. Instead of turning the gas valve to reserve I turned it off and the engine died. After coasting over to the shoulder I realized what I did, switched the valve to reserve and restarted the bike. This put me at the end of the refueling line and it took me longer then normal to gas up. The AMVETS service foundation Paid for the gas for almost 300 bikes. After fueling I staged my bike with the third platoon and went looking for food. Another free meal, also provided by the AMVETS service foundation. We had strawberry shortcake, potato salad and BBQ sandwiches . They also have little goodies for us such as lotions, sunscreen, shampoo, snacks etc… Very nice!! We also had trucker music for entertainment. It was a nice visit.
Afterwards we rode to Corydon where we were had another police escort out to the fairgrounds with streets lined with hundreds of people again out to show their support. There we had bike washes for free, a fish fry and coleslaw dinner (Supplied by Moose lodge and American Leagon.) That evening and the next morning registered over 100 more bikes!!! Only three more days to go!
Because we register many riders every day and some only rider for a day or less there is no way to know how many we depart with every morning.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://my-senior-blog.blogspot.com/2009/05/run-for-wall-wentzville-mo-to-corydon_31.html' title='Run for the Wall. Wentzville Mo. To Corydon In. Part 1

Run for the Wall.
Wentzville Mo. To Corydon In. Part 1

A note before I start. Although I ride alone if it wasn’t for my wife, Diane, my Run for the Wall would have been much more difficult if not impossible. Thank you for your support and I love you very much.
Day 7 for the Run day 1 for me.
Tuesday 19 2009
Everything is ready, I think. The Run has a mandatory morning meeting, usually at 7:30 AM. I leave the house at 6:00 AM and stop for gas when I reach Wentzville. The staging area for the bikes is in a church parking lot about a quarter mile from VFW post 5327. The Run rides in groups they call platoons. When I signed up I was assigned to the third platoon. The third platoon was indicated by a pink ribbon on my left handlebar. I was latter told that 111 new riders signed up at Wentzville Mo. We left Wentzville with almost 300 riders.

When I arrived at the staging area I lined up with the third platoon. After parking my bike and double checking everything I walked over to the VFW hall for a bite of breakfast. The home cooked breakfast of coffee, juice, sausage, bacon, eggs, biscuits gravy and other yummy treats hit the spot before we hit the road. After more then a bite of breakfast I took the GM shuttle back to the staging area.

After the morning meeting and meeting with the 3rd platoon leader we got the time to ride call. FIVE MINUTES, FIVE MINUTES. That means get your butt on the bike, kickstands up and we roll in FIVE MINUTES.

Our first stop is the Wentzville Veteran's Memorial for a quick ceremony and our first group picture. A local school band played and the Wentzville Fire Dept Honor guard paraded the Colors for us. Then on to the Jefferson Barracks Veterans Medical Center.

The visit with the patients is always very special. We walked up on the floors and visited the ones that couldn't come downstairs. There were dozens of them that came out to see us ride in, in their beds and wheelchairs. The irony is the fact that they can't thank us enough for what we are doing and we are there to thank them for their sacrifices and service. As usual there were snacks and cold drinks provided.

Stay tuned for part 2, Wentzville to Corydon.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://my-senior-blog.blogspot.com/2009/05/run-for-wall-wentzville-mo-to-corydon.html' title='Run for the Wall. At about 5:30 PM they arrived with flags flying and engines roaring. Boy scouts waving flags lined highway Z near the entrance to the VFW post. At the entrance the Wentzville fire dept had two ladder trucks with ladders extended and a huge flag flying between them. As the riders turned left off of highway Z they passed beneath the flag.
I stood in line to sign up for the Run which I would join the next morning. After signing up I found a friend that I met On my first Run in 2007. Ken, I call him Ken from Kansas was riding double with his wife and a small dog. Ken was towing a tent trailer and they were camping on this trip.
There was a short ceremony where we heard from a POW and other Vets. It is always so special to hear first hand experiences of those who have fought to preserve our freedom. Afterwards the riders had a great homemade dinner and once again, fresh baked deserts. Dinner was provided free by VFW post 5327. They would also provide breakfast the next morning.
Some of the riders camped on the VFW grounds and GM provided a shuttle to showers at the GM plant and a local high school.
After a while we all headed home and Diane and I spent some time doing last minute checks on the bike and luggage. Early to bed and early to rise. Tomorrow, my first day on the run, will be a long day. Tomorrow will be day one for me but day seven for the Run. Remember some of these riders started in California.
To be continued.

A senior takes a long motorcycle ride.

A senior takes a long motorcycle ride.
Before I left on Run for the Wall I went to my Orthopedic Doctor and received cortisone shots in both knees to relieve my arthritis pain. This time the shots did not help much so I was taking Tylenol arthritis pain pills several times a day. It was a tough ride. Nine hundred miles, four days from Wentzville Mo. To Washington D.C. and nine hundred miles and three days home. That brought up a lot of memories. I am a lot older then my co-worker, so I go back a lot further. If you are old enough and grew up in a city you will remember some or all of these things. If you are not old enough, well it was a different world then.

I was born in July of 1940, so it was around 1944-1946.

The iceman cometh. No not a movie, a real iceman. I don’t know if we were behind the times but we had an icebox the required a block of ice to keep things cold. We had a sign that had 25 and 50 on one side and 75 and 100 on the other side. When you wanted ice you placed the sign in the window with the amount you wanted up. I always thought that this was a very good system. The iceman just drove by and if the sign was in the window he would stop and deliver it right into the ice box. I do remember that later on we got a refrigerator with one of those big coils on top.
We had a coal fired furnace. I remember my older brother filling the auger unit that kept the fire going.
We walked almost everywhere. If it was too far to walk we took the streetcar.

Later, around 1950-1953
I sold the Sunday papers. The St. Louis Post Dispatch and the St. Louis Globe Democrat. On Saturday evening we would meet the paper delivery truck and get our papers. We would pull our paper carts down the middle of the street yelling Post and Globe; get your Post and globe. I thought that I was rich if I cleared 85 cents.
I remember the tamale man pushing his cart and yelling tamales; get your hot tamales’ I always saved money for the tamale man.
And the knife sharpener pushing his cart. He had some kind of gadget that clanged every time the wheel rotated. He had a big sharpening stone that rotated by pushing a pedal, sort of like an old sewing machine. We only saw him about once a month.
The produce truck came by every afternoon. An old pickup stacked with fresh everything. He was a good guy; he would give us kid’s free apples and oranges. Of course they weren’t always the freshest.
No six packs in the local bar. The men would stop off for a beer after work and when they left along with them came the beer buck for carry out.

Time to put the memories back in the box.

High-Fructose Corn Syrup

I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic (high blood glucose) and told to loose weight. Because of this I am now attempting to eat healthier. More vegetables, fruit and less packaged (refined) foods. I have also started reading food labels to find out how many carbohydrates and sugar is in the product. I have found out that that there are many types of “sugar”. One of the ingredients I have seen in many products is high-fructose corn syrup

Many older Americans are overweight. As we age, our taste buds don't work as
efficiently, prompting us to eat more of everything that tastes sweet. "High-fructose corn syrup" is in almost everything.
The dangers of white sugar have been known for a long time. But now the evidence seems clear that "high-fructose corn syrup" is an even more dangerous consequence for our love of sweets. Dietary experts are singling out this fake syrup as one reason for the startling rise in obesity in America and related increase in diabetes.
"High-fructose corn syrup" is not the corn syrup you buy in a bottle at the supermarket to use for baking. It's an artificial additive that's cheaper and easier for manufacturers of sodas and fruit juices to use. If you read labels, you'll find this additive in such products as pizzas, baked beans, candies, yeast breads, sweetened yogurt, baby food, ketchup, cookies, beer, sodas, juices and alarmingly in most brands of manufactured foods. I have to read a lot of labels to find a brand that doesn't contain "HFCS". If the artificial additive "high-fructose corn syrup" is added to an otherwise healthy food, is it still healthy? If you add a speck of poison to vitamins, are they still good for you? After all, just a speck of poison probably won't hurt you on the spot, but accumulative amounts most probably will. 30 years of these accumulative affects of "high-fructose corn syrup" is evident in the obesity and health problems we have today.
. The U.S. Agriculture Department reports that Americans consume more "high-fructose corn syrup" than white sugar.

Check out “Blood Sugar Specifics” at Puritans Pride.
Blood Sugar Specifics is the ideal supplement for those looking to maintain blood sugar levels that are already within a normal range.** This formula features a high-potency source of Chromax®, a patented form of the important mineral Chromium Picolinate. Conversely, their energy needs are reduced because their body chemistry has slowed and they tend to be less active.
The elderly need a high-quality, nutrient-rich diet. The very old or those with certain medical conditions may need vitamin and mineral supplements for medical reasons. Veiled women and elderly people who have little exposure to sunlight may need vitamin D. Vitamin C can help keep tissue and bones healthy and ward off infection. Vitamin E and beta-carotene are recommended to prop up the immune system; calcium and iron for backache and tremors; C and A (retinol) for ageing skin. Zinc is often deficient in older people and may help heal wounds

Tips for older motorcycle riders

I found this posted on a forum for motorcycle riders.I think that these tips apply to all riders.

Tips for older motorcycle riders
• Keep a greater following distance from other vehicles, perhaps three seconds (the time it takes to close that gap) or more. Similarly, allow for larger gaps when moving into a stream of traffic. If possible, avoid complicated and congested roads and intersections where too much information, too fast, can lead to "input overload" and bad decisions.
• Keep windshield, face shield and eyeglass lenses clear of dirt and grime that may hinder an accurate perception of traffic and road conditions. Avoid tinted lenses at night and glasses with wide frames that can create blind spots.
• Remember that car drivers are getting older, too, and may be coping with the same changes in physical abilities and skills.
• Choose a motorcycle with a good "fit" that doesn't cause muscle strain in overall handling or operation of controls. Also, look for one with large dials and easy-to-read symbols that are brightly illuminated at night.
• Wear protective gear. A little extra body armor may diminish the time and difficulties older riders face in recovering from injuries.
• Have an annual eye exam. If over 60, make sure the eye doctor checks for such conditions associated with aging as cataracts and glaucoma.
• Regular exercise can enhance flexibility, strength and endurance in riding

A senior Citizen take a long ride

Run for the Wall

It is almost time for Run for the Wall. I have been getting myself and my motorcycle ready. I will be leaving Wentzville Mo. On Tuesday May 18th. As I said this year I will not be camping. Hate to admit it I may be too old for such a tough ride and camping at nights. So this year I will be moteling it. Due to the weather I have not gotten in a lot of riding, so in the next two weeks I need to get some miles on my behind. No additional information will be needed to get the one-time money.
Attorney General Jack Conway and Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Janie Miller warned that those who receive money through those programs should not give any personal information — Social Security numbers or bank account information — to callers or e-mailers purporting to be from the federal government.
"Individuals served by these programs will not be asked to provide any additional information to receive the payments and should be on alert for fraudulent attempts to obtain their personal information," Miller said.
Here are some tips and things to watch out for:
■ Steer clear of any caller who claims to represent the government and claims to have problems with depositing the stimulus payment. Do not give the caller your Social Security number or bank account information.
■ Be wary of callers who claim that you qualify for a stimulus payment but say they need additional information to verify your identity.
■ There is no application for the stimulus benefit. It is automatic. Do not respond to Web sites, e-mails or other advertisements that promise additional stimulus money or grants.

How To Foil Scams Aimed At Senior Citizens

How To Foil Scams Aimed At Senior Citizens
Senior citizens are special targets for con artists. In fact, according to some estimates, one-third of all victims of fraud schemes nationwide are seniors, despite the fact that they make up about only one-eighth of the population. Worse still, approximately 60 percent of all health care fraud victims are senior citizens.
Why Do Con Artists Pick on Seniors?
There are a number of reasons why the elderly are vulnerable to con artist's scams, among them:
Seniors are trusting
Many elderly people live alone, making it easier for
fraud artist to go one-on-one with his or her victim.
Many seniors are lonely and are susceptible to the charm
and persuasive wiles of the con artist. Seniors often have ready cash or liquid assets available.
What Are The Scams Seniors Should Look Out For And How Can They Be Prevented?
The U.S. government estimates that nationwide there are more than eight hundred active fraud scams, most of which can victimize the elderly as well as members of other age groups. Some of these con games, such as high pressure, deceptive sales pitches for living trusts, "low-risk, high-yield" investment scams and "miracle" arthritis remedies, are specifically aimed at senior citizens. However, seniors also fall prey in large numbers to scams involving advanced loan fees, home improvements, auto repairs and work-at-home schemes.
Here are a few quick tips you should observe to avoid being taken by any of these fraudulent schemes:
Don't let greed overcome common sense. Look out for get-rich-quick schemes, "free" offers, or "you have won" solicitations. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it is.
Wait 24 hours before making a purchase; there is no need to rush. When I work in the front yard I always leave the front door open, with the screen door closed but not locked. When I take something into the back yard I don’t think to lock the front door. So far I have been lucky I have not been ripped off. I think that I need to change my ways.

The burglary team usually consists of two to four people. In many cases, a male will drive three females to the targeted area. The male driver either cruises the neighborhood or parks away from the targeted area.
The female suspects will roam the neighborhood looking to approach senior citizens while working in their yards.
One suspect will distract the homeowner by asking any number of questions. The second suspect will then go into the unlocked residence and steal cash and/or jewelry.
Suspects will sometimes knock or ring the door bell. The suspects will pretend to be ill; ask for a drink of water; ask if the house is for sale; ask about previous owner(s); pretend to be looking for a lost pet; or any excuse to get inside the home.
If confronted by the homeowner, the burglary team will use any type of simple distraction, e.g., need a drink of water; use of phone or bathroom; looking for a lost pet or rental property; and sale of tablecloths, etc.
Theft of cash, jewelry, or silver occurs with no ransacking. Several days or weeks can pass before the homeowner realizes she/he has been the victim of a burglary. The suspects are careful to put everything back in its place.

A SENIOR REMEMBERS

I think some of us are missing something in our life’s. Most of us (not I) now live in subdivisions. A lot of younger people have never experienced living in a city environment. They have just moved from subdivision to subdivision. A lot of Senior Citizens have lived in small towns or cities that have a Main Street. I did not grow up in a small town, but in St. Louis, Mo. a mid sized city. The city was made up of many small towns called neighborhoods. Each neighborhood had it’s own “Main Street”. I now live in St. Charles Mo. and we have a thriving Main Street. Too bad it is mostly a tourist attraction. It is still a great place to take a slow walk while checking out the store windows. When we first moved here there was a barber shop, small grocery and other very useful shops within walking distance. The big “W” has ruined more then a few Main Streets. Now we have to get into the car and drive to some mega store.
There is a housing development in ST. Charles called New Town. They are trying to bring back small local owned stores, places to walk, benches to sit on and neighbors to talk to. I think this is a very good idea, but still not Main Street.

The year that I joined the Army

I joined the Army in January of 1958 at the age of 17 and a half years. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, announced today that the federal government will send out $250 economic recovery payments to people who receive Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits beginning in early May 2009 and continuing throughout the month. No action is required to get the payment, which will be sent separately from the person’s regular monthly payment.

"The Social Security Administration and Commissioner Astrue have been working closely with other federal agencies to get these payments out the door in record time and into the hands of folks who need it most," said Vice President Biden. "These are checks that will make a big difference in the lives of older Americans and people with disabilities - many of whom have been hit especially hard by the economic crisis that has swept across the country."

“We have been working diligently to issue the $250 one-time recovery payments as soon as possible,” Commissioner Astrue said. “The legislation requires extensive coordination with other federal agencies and I’m pleased we are on track to issue these recovery payments earlier than the statute requires. Soon more than $13 billion will be in the hands of more than 50 million Americans.”

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides for a one-time payment of $250 to adult Social Security beneficiaries, and to SSI recipients, except those receiving Medicaid in care facilities. To receive the payment the individual must be eligible for Social Security or SSI during the months of November 2008, December 2008 or January 2009.

The legislation also provides for a one-time payment to Veterans Affairs (VA) and Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) beneficiaries. The VA and RRB will be responsible for paying individuals under their respective programs. However, if someone receives Social Security and SSI, VA or RRB benefits, he or she will receive only one $250 payment. People getting Social Security or SSI should not contact the agency unless a payment is not received by June 4, 2009.

For more detailed information about the $250 one-time economic recovery payments, go to www.socialsecurity.gov/payment.

HYPERTENSION (High blood pressure)

Help controlling Hypertension.
Avoid foods high in sodium.
Sodium causes vasoconstriction, the narrowing of blood vessels. Therefore, the amount of space blood has to travel through decreases. This decrease creates an increase in the resistance the blood has to overcome. This increased resistance makes it more difficult for the arteries to expand with each beat of the heart, causing the internal pressure to rise. High sodium foods include processed meats, salted snack foods, cheeses, and canned foods.
Eat foods high in potassium.
Good dietary sources of potassium include bananas, potatoes, avocados, tomato juice, grapefruit juice, and acorn squash. Potassium helps maintain intracellular osmotic pressure, which is the force required to stop the flow of water across a membrane.
Limit adding salt to foods, particularly in restaurants.
Most foods, especially at restaurants, are already high in sodium.
Use salt substitutes.
Eat calcium and magnesium rich foods to help reduce blood pressure.
Food sources rich in calcium include low-fat milk, green beans, sardines with bones, broccoli, spinach, and tofu. Good sources of magnesium-rich foods include any legumes and seeds, such as navy beans and sunflower seeds.
Lower saturated fat intake.
Saturated fat increases the level of low density lipoproteins (LDL), which tend to stick to the sides of the arterial wall. This deposit of fat is known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis begins with the accumulation of fatty streaks on the inner arterial walls. When this fatty buildup enlarges and becomes hardened with minerals, such as calcium, it forms plaque. Plaque stiffens the arteries and narrows the passages through them. Thus, blood pressure rises. This rise in blood pressure is due to the arteries' lack of elasticity.

ANTIOXIDANTS

I have found that several of the foods that I like are very good sources of antioxidants. My favorite drink Green Tea, my favorite snack Walnuts, and one of my favorite side dish’s Pinto Beans. Read more about Antioxidants below.
Antioxidants
Artichokes and beans may not be at the top of your list of favorite foods, but when it comes to antioxidants, these veggies earn a coveted place. They are among a growing variety of foods found to contain surprisingly high levels of these disease-fighting compounds, according to a new USDA study, which researchers say is the largest, most comprehensive analysis to date of the antioxidant content of commonly consumed foods.
Studies have shown that eating a diet rich in antioxidant-containing foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, has been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

Antioxidants and Good Food Sources
Vitamin C - Citrus fruits and their juices, berries, dark green vegetables (spinach, asparagus, green peppers, brussel sprouts, broccoli, watercress, other greens), red and yellow peppers, tomatoes and tomato juice, pineapple, cantaloupe, mangos, papaya and guava.

Vitamin E - Vegetable oils such as olive, soybean, corn, cottonseed and safflower, nuts and nut butters, seeds, whole grains, wheat, wheat germ, brown rice, oatmeal, soybeans, sweet potatoes, legumes (beans, lentils, split peas) and dark leafy green vegetables.

Selenium - Brazil nuts, brewer’s yeast, oatmeal, brown rice, chicken, eggs, dairy products, garlic, molasses, onions, salmon, seafood, tuna, wheat germ, whole grains and most vegetables.
Beta Carotene - Variety of dark orange, red, yellow and green vegetables and fruits such as broccoli, kale, spinach, sweet potatoes, carrots, red and yellow peppers, apricots, cantaloupe and mangos.

For more about Antioxidants check out my website: WWW.searchforbetterhealth.com

For a very good selection of Antioxidants suppliments click on the link below. We are experienced at raising children, helping with grand children and many other things.
My wife, grandma, is the go to person when it come to wedding showers, baby showers, birthday parties and other special events. Our two daughters have picked up on this and between the three of them organize a lot of our family functions.
I try and help out with problems they have around the house. WHY? One reason is that I can work full time, collect a full time salary and still draw a full Social Security payment. When you reach your full retirement age, for me 66 and 6 months, you can work full time and collect full Social Security. Second reason is if I don’t keep busy at something I will sit around and watch the history channel all day.
It is not unusual to run into an old friend and the first think they ask is “how is your retirement”. After explaining that I am not retired I ask them how is your retirement? The usual answer is not doing much, watching TV, puttering around the house, bored.
I am thinking of partial retirement and may be looking for a part time job. I have looked into different part time jobs such as security guard and courier. Therefore over time all seniors will come to use the internet more than they presently do. In the mean time I publish a senior newspaper in New Hampshire called The Experienced Citizen. Seniors are the last group of people who read real newspapers on a regular basis and to reach this huge and valuable population one must advertise in senior papers.
Experienced Citizen I would like to hear from you. I would like to thank NEENEE for this post. There is a link to NEENEE’s blog at the end of this post.

I found this post a while back and it got me thinking. If the author of this
blog is 68 years old and is still working full time, rides a motorcycle not only for leisure, but to participate in Run for the Wall, has beaten his diabetes with diet and exercise, has lost 30 lbs., and very active, why shouldn't all seniors strive to be like him?
Reading these posts has made me think about my own health and fitness. At 42 years old I actually believe Poppy is more active and healthy than I am. I've been doing some of his posted exercises and trying to eat healthier. I keep saying I can't wait for the weather to get warmer so I can start walking in my neighborhood or at the high school track, but who am I kidding, it's just a tactic to put it off. I could just as easily bundle up and head outside! I have two dogs, I could be walking them or taking them to the dog park. So, that's what I'm going to do, not when the weather warms up, but now.
My kids love spending time with their grandparents because they are very active and fun to be with. They actually get down on the ground and play with them. They take them everywhere (more than I do sometimes) and seem to never tire. I want to be that kind of grandparent (someday), so I'm going to keep reading these posts and keep following his tips.
Thanks again, for all the valuable information, it's really opened my eyes.

If anyone else is interested in being a guest poster email me at gbbbiker@aol.com. For many years I drank diet cola. I quit for several reasons. One I got tired of the taste and I do not like the sweet tasting sodas. Two I did not like all the carbonation. Three too many ingredients that I did not understand.
At that time I started drinking Green Tea. I like the taste and the fact that it is more natural. I buy the large bottle and drink it cold. I also buy and brew the Green Tea bags for a hot drink.
I read somewhere that the bottled Green Tea does not have as much of the EGCG as the fresh brewed Green Tea. I may start brewing all of my Green Tea and chilling some for a cold drink.
Some information about Green Tea
All teas (green, black, and oolong) are derived from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. The difference is in how the plucked leaves are prepared. Green tea, unlike black and oolong tea, is not fermented, so the active constituents remain unaltered in the herb. The leaves of the tea plant are used both as a social and a medicinal beverage
Active constituents
Green tea contains volatile oils, vitamins, minerals, and caffeine, but the primary constituents of interest are the polyphenols, particularly the catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The polyphenols are believed to be responsible for most of green tea’s roles in promoting good health.
Green tea has been shown to mildly lower total cholesterol levels and improve the cholesterol profile (decreasing LDL “bad” cholesterol and increasing HDL “good” cholesterol) in most, but not all, studies. Green tea may also promote cardiovascular health by making platelets in the blood less sticky.
Green tea has also been shown to protect against damage to LDL (“bad”) cholesterol caused by oxygen. Consumption of green tea increases antioxidant activity in the blood. Oxidative damage to LDL can promote arthrosclerosis. While population studies have suggested that consumption of green tea is associated with protection against atherosclerosis, the evidence is still preliminary.

MULTIVITAMINS

MULTIVITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS AND NUTRITION
How important are nutritional multivitamin supplement? In July 2008 I was diagnosed as Pre-diabetic.
My Doctor told me that my blood glucose was too high. Not quite to the diabetic level, but higher then he liked. I am 5ft. 5in. tall and at that time weighed 218 pounds.
I was prescribed a drug called Metformin, which I take twice daily. I was also told to lose weight and exercise.
Like most diabetics and pre-diabetics I have cut out high carbohydrate and sugar added foods. This meant giving up a lot of junk food that I loved. I no longer eat ice cream, cookies or most breads. I have added whole fiber breads and more vegetables to my diet.
I have since lost a little over 30 pounds and now weigh 187 pounds. I need to drop at least 20 more pounds.
Because of my pre-diabetes I need to avoid most refined sugar that is found in many low-fat or fat-free foods on the market.

Toning up the arms without weights

Disclaimer: If you are going to follow any diet or exercise program talk to your Doctor. I have always liked walnuts and snacked on them even before my diet. I have always been told that walnuts are a healthy snack. Another of my favorite snacks is the lowly peanut.
I Have been searching for info on walnuts and peanuts. Remember that both of these nuts are fairly high in calories. So eat in moderation.
One or the main reasons that I choose walnuts and peanuts is that they are relatively cheap and easy to find.
Walnuts
Walnuts are a rather awesome food and plant. Their slightly bitter flesh consists mainly of a blend of vegetable fats(60%), followed by a very respectable amount of protein (24%) and a lower amount of carbohydrates (10%)
What's great about walnuts is that medical studies have shown them to improve several physical illnesses, promote weight loss (even though the caloric content is fairly high) and enhance overall health. This beneficial effects are probably linked to their high content in seldom-eaten Omega-3 polyunsaturated fats, which are slowly but steadily disappearing from our diets (rich in processed foods) but are absolutely essential for the good functioning of our bodies.
It has been calculated that more than 95% of the American population is chronically lacking a good daily amount of Omega-3 fats, which causes a general decrease in health (especially heart conditions, weight control and cancer). Aside from walnuts, this substance is most readily available in foods such as fat fish (like salmon or halibut) or vegetable sources such as flaxseed, but really, how likely are you to bring a piece of salmon and some flaxseed at work? We think walnuts are the most practical solution for today's fast-paced work schedules. 5-10 Walnuts a day is all it takes to regain a big slice of your health.

Peanuts
Peanuts contain high quality plant protein. When comparing peanuts to similar foods, peanuts have more protein than any other legume or nut. This, according to the Peanut Institute, is especially important for children, vegetarians and people eating more meatless meals.
Peanuts contain mostly beneficial monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These fats as compared to saturated fats have been shown to help lower blood cholesterol levels. Lowering your blood cholesterol level may reduce your risk of coronary heart disease.
One ounce, or one small handful of peanuts contains 2 big grams of fiber. This is 9% of the fiber you need each day! One ounce of peanuts provide 16% of your daily need of vitamin E. Vitamin E has been shown to act as an antioxidant which may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Peanuts are an important source of essential minerals such as magnesium, copper, phosphorus, potassium and zinc, and a good source vitamin B6.
With all these nutrients, it's no wonder that regular peanut munching has health benefits that can be measured in research studies.

Do senior citizens use the internet?

Senior citizens unite.
When I decided to start a blog about older Americans I was told that we elderly folks don’ t use computers. I remember how some of them were treated. I won’t go into it, but it was not good. Think back to what it was like.

Patriot Guard
There is a group, mostly motorcycle riders, called the Patriot Guard Riders that welcomes home any and all returning troops. When one of our fallen heroes returns home, at the request of family, they stand a Flag line at the funeral home. They are always there regardless of weather or other conditions. They are telling the world that he or she is one of our heros. They also escort returning troops from the airport to there home base. This is their way of letting our troops know how much they are appreciated. Check them out at http://www.patriotguard.org/ .
Run for the Wall
Run For The Wall (RFTW) was started in 1989 as an effort by James Gregory and Bill Evans. They were a couple of Vietnam Veterans who traveled across the heartland of America on motorcycles, talking to local radio, TV, and newspapers about the fact that we had thousands of men and women still unaccounted for from all of our wars. The need for this awareness continues today and we continue this tradition every May.
Mission Statement: To promote healing among ALL veterans and their families and friends, to call for an accounting of all Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action (POW/MIA), to honor the memory of those Killed in Action (KIA) from all wars, and to support our military personnel all over the world.
The above statements are from the Run for the Wall website. Check it out at http://www.rftw.org/ .

Run for the Wall starts in California. It splits into two groups. One group take a southern route and one group takes a central route. They meet up in Washington D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial and walk together to the Viet Nam Wall for a ceremony and to present a plaque. To many of the Viet Nam vets on Run for the Wall this run is their welcome home.
For the last two years I joined Run for the Wall at Wentzville Mo. On my first ride with Run for the Wall I was amazed to find out how many people helped out along the way. Wentzville is an overnight stop. Approximately 300 bikes arrived in Wentzville for the overnight stop. When they arrived they gassed up their bikes and a local group paid. Several gas stops were paid for by local people supporting the Run. After I joined the Run, between Wentzville and Washington D.C. I paid for very few meals. Many groups, religious, VFW and others had food ready when we arrived at the stop. When we left a stop, for miles up the road people would be on the overpasses waving flags and shouting encouragement. Enough for now. I will be on the Run again this year. Hope to see some of you on the road. http://www.rftw.org/
The bottom line here is never, never, never forget what our troops have done for us and this country.

Please feel free to post any comment. In one of my earlier posts I talked about my health problems. I have several medical “problems”. These are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood glucose and last but not least arthritis in both knees. On a daily basis I take Lipitor, Diovan, Atenolol, Metforman and a 81mg aspirin. About every 4 months my Doctor gives me a shot in both knees to relieve the stiffness and pain.
Because of these “problems” I am looking for ways to loose more weight and get into better condition.
Over the last eight months I have lost 30 pounds. My knees are doing better. Losing the weight has extended getting my knee shots to about every 6 months. But,I am starting to look a little flabby in the arms and stomach.
First I have had a physical from my Doctor and we have talked about what I am doing to loose weight and get in shape. Second the posts on this blog are what I am doing for myself.
Disclaimer
If you are going to follow any diet or exercise program talk to your Doctor. Follow the Doctors advice. Do not do this because I do.
That said I will continue to search for information to improve my health and longevity.

food tips for a better diet

These are some of the things that I have been told about food. I am not going to tell you that I follow all of these tips, but I do try.
“Eat five different kinds of fruits and vegetables every day to recapture the disease-preventing phytochemicals missing in the American diet.” - Dr. James Duke, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Shop on the outside aisles of grocery stores where the freshest whole foods are generally found.
Be flexible and take advantage of seasonal fruits and vvegetables.
“Fruits, vegetables and grains contain a synergistic mix of micronutrients that haven’t been duplicated in pills or capsules. There is no need to thicken soups with cream; you can use pureed white beans. Experiment with one new food a week to expand your horizons. Think about one of the less common grains and vegetables.
When eating out, don’t think you are necessarily limited to the choices on the menu. My Doctor told me that I have high blood glucose and I need to loose weight. I have started a light workout routine. I am starting with only one pound. I am following the workout shown below.
One Arm Dumbbell Rows
One Arm Dumbbell Rows primarily target the back muscles with a secondary emphasis on the rear deltoids. The correct way to perform them is the following:1. Pick up the dumbbell, palm in (facing your torso), and hold it about six inches off the floor. Your torso should be bent Parallel to the floor; keep your back straight. 2. Pull the dumbbell straight up to the side of your chest, keeping your upper arm close to your side. 3. Lower the dumbbell straight down to the starting position. Crunches primarily target the upper abdominal muscles with a secondary emphasis on the lower abdominals. The correct way to perform them is the following: 1. Lie on the floor with the backs of your lower legs resting on top of a chair.2. Position your body so that your thighs are at 90 degree angles to your torso.3. With your hands behind your head or crossed at your chest, pull your torso up as far as possible. 4. Return to the starting position. 5. Don't swing your torso up and down using various muscles; instead concentrate solely on using your abdominal muscles. Dumbbell Upright Rows Upright Rows primarily target the side and front deltoids with a secondary emphasis on the trapezius muscles and the rear deltoids. The correct way to perform them is the following: 1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at arm's length and resting against your upper thighs. 2. Keep the dumbbells about 10 inches apart and your thumbs facing each other. 3. Pull the dumbbells straight up until they're nearly even with your chin. 4. Keep your elbows out. (As you pull the dumbbells straight up, concentrate on raising the elbows up).5. At the top position the dumbbells should be level with your ears. The elbows should be at the highest position. 6. Keep the dumbbells close to your body, and pause at the top for a second. 7. Concentrate on keeping tension on your shoulders as you lower the weights. Dumbbell CurlsDumbbell Curls primarily target the biceps with a secondary emphasis on the forearm muscles and the biceps brachialis. The correct way to perform them is the following: 1. Hold a dumbbell on each hand, with your palms up. 2. Stand erect with your back straight. 3. Start the exercise with the dumbbells at arm's length and resting against your upper thighs. 4. Curl the dumbbells in a semicircular motion until your forearms touch your biceps. 5. Keep your upper arms close to your sides. 6. Reverse the motion and lower to the starting position. 7. Don't move your torso back and forth to help lift the weight. This not only takes tension off the biceps, but it can also hurt your lower back. Overhead Triceps ExtensionsOverhead Triceps Extensions primarily target the triceps with a secondary emphasis on the forearm muscles. The correct way to perform them is the following: 1. Grasp a dumbbell with both hand and hold it overhead at arm's length. The dumbbell's top plate should be resting in the palms of your hands with your thumbs around the bar. 2. Stand erect. 3. Keep your upper arms close to your head. 4. Lower the dumbbell in a semicircular motion behind your head until your forearms touch your biceps. 5. Go back to the starting position and repeat. 6. Ensure that the weights in the dumbbell are properly adjusted and secured in order to avoid an accident (plates falling on your head; Ouch!)

Many of us give up exercise as we grow older. A new study shows regular exercise can help the elderly improve their memory, and delay the onset of dementia. To preserve your own memories or those of that special person in your life, try out these low-key activities with long-lasting effects. And be sure to encourage your friends and family to keep on exercising, too.
                 Walking
A study, released by researchers from the University of Melbourne, Australia and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, showed that those who took part in regular exercise – in this case, walking for 20 minutes a day – performed far better on memory and brain function tests than people who didn’t. Plus, exercise is an awesome way to treat arthritis . So, lace up your sneakers and go stroll a flat route through your neighborhood or a well-groomed trail in the woods. One of the benefits of walking is that it is low cost. A good pair of walking shoes and you are on you’re way.
Make this a group event. Ask friends, relatives and neighbors to join you.
Water aerobics
It’s no wonder that water aerobics is such a hit in retirement communities – the undulating motion of the water provides resistance while the low-impact moves are easy on arthritic joints and brittle bones. If you can’t make a water aerobics class, try aqua jogging. Simply, grab a flotation belt and walk along the bottom of the pool or tread water in the deep end. Check out the local YMCA in you’re area . Many have water aerobic programs. http://www.ymca.net/

More exercise information in my next post.

More Senior citizen info

To make life better for the seniors, both government and private institutions have several special programs. They include programs like social security, healthcare packages, tax benefits, insurance benefits, etc by the government. Private businesses also do their share by offering specialist services and special senior citizen discounts.
However none of the benefits are delivered to the seniors on a platter. You have to identify the benefits and programs available and apply for these benefits. You may get senior citizen discounts when you book a ticket with a travel agent. However, you may not receive the healthcare benefits or insurance because simply because you haven't applied for them.
Many senior citizens are not aware of most benefits available to them. You could miss out on opportunities this way, by not knowing about them. There are many websites, magazines, and newspaper reports aimed at seniors citizens. It takes time to learn about the benefits and the right methods of applying for them. One of the purposes of this blog is to find these opportunities for myself, and to pass then on to others
Senior citizens have several benefits to avail themselves of. Social security and healthcare are the main items you should not miss. Check out the Social security website at http://www.ssa.gov/. I am also a member of AARP check them out at http://www.aarp.org/. There many other useful websites, and I will add them as I find them.
It is now time to explore the world. There are many travel offers for the senior citizen. Offered by different travel agencies , hotels and motels, restaurants and cruse lines . Many opportunities don't come from the government, but from companies and institutes that offer good services to the seniors. Many companies have found that it is good business to push for our dollars. We , the senior citizen, more free time, and can travel at times of the year that those with children can not.
Life can be good for seniors. We can take advantage of the many programs offered by governments and businesses if we make an effort to find them.
If you have any good website links that we Senior citizens can take advantage of please comment.

Fun for the grandkids.
My daughter has set up a website that has a lot of good stuff to do with you're grandkids. Social security is just one among the different programs aimed at helping us after retirement. Medicare is another very popular one. At one time these benefits were available to us at the age of 65. Although Medicare is available at age 65, Social security’s full retirement age has increased depending on you’re birth date. You and you’re employer contribute to the social security fund while you work and receive the benefits after your retirement.
The common social security disability benefits include Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Disabled Adult Child, Disabled Widow's/Widower's Benefits and Medical Insurance. Retirement benefits and spousal benefits are what attract most of us to Social Security.
While the checks arrive at your doorsteps or in you’re bank account every month without failure, you need to qualify yourself once a while. The government needs to make sure you are still qualified to receive the benefits package. Direct deposit of social security funds also can eliminate the risks of the check being lost or stolen. This said I have been drawing Social security for about four years and I never had to “qualify” myself.
Some people say you should start receiving Social Security benefits early. Some say you should receive it later. If both you and you’re spouse have Social Security contributions, one can draw early and the other can wait. The strategies of getting better returns from Social Security can be planned out with the assistance of a knowledgeable finance planner. It is not wise to blindly follow any schemes or conventional wisdom. I have seen many schemes on the internet, but who can you trust. Play it save and talk to a financial planner if you are interested in trying too increase you’re payment.

My intent.

As you can see this blog is about growing older. Notice I said growing older not growing old. I am on a quest to find out what, if anything, can be done to slow this progression.
I have many older friend that are on the same or similar medications.
That is it for now. As I live and learn I will post it on this blog.
If you have older friends or relatives have them check in here and add any comment.

Aging

Growing old is but a state of mind.
You can enjoy your age or feel sorry
for yourself and sit around and pine.
You can make your self feel happy or
blue, whichever you choose is up to you.
Remember you can be old in age but
young at heart. Work hard for 40 years or so, retire and generally relax. However, the retirement age and even the term senior citizen is changing depending on the situation.
The senior age is moving higher in some cases like eligibility for full social security benefits and lower in others like membership eligibility for AARP. With increasing longevity the definition of senior citizen will no doubt continue to shift and change. However, if you can relate to the following definition you are probably in the age range where you are thinking about retirement or may have already retired from one job and started looking for another one.
Old age is when friends that you have not seen for some time are so gray and wrinkled and bald, they don’t recognize you.
